I am a drummer and composer based in London. Born in Bristol in 1983 to a musical family I studied classical clarinet from the age of seven, then piano and later soprano saxophone. I am primarily self-taught as a drummer, having begun at around the age of eleven. I studied music at Cambridge University from 2002-2005, focussing on composition and jazz analysis.

My debut album ‘Still Picture' was released in 2004 on New Canvas Records and has been widely praised in the jazz press as well as having been featured on BBC Radio 3’s ‘Late Junction’ and ‘Jazz Record Requests’ programmes. It was recorded with a group of very talented and individual young jazz musicians who were students at Cambridge when I was in my first year there. The compositions on ‘Still Picture’ were largely inspired by artists associated with the ECM label, such as Kenny Wheeler, Eberhard Weber, Jan Garbarek, David Darling, Arild Andersen and others.

Following ‘Still Picture’, I produced and performed on an album by the South African jazz pianist and composer Nishlyn Ramanna, also released on New Canvas Records. This featured top British saxophonist Stan Sulzmann on saxophones and alto flute and was released in 2005, entitled ‘A Thought’.

In 2006 I recorded my second album. Whereas the recording of both ‘Still Picture’ and ‘A Thought’ was spread across several months each, my new CD ‘Interpretations’ was entirely recorded in a single afternoon, on September 16th 2006 at Eastcote Studios in London. For this project I put together a seven-piece band made up of some of the very finest jazz musicians in London (Liam Noble, James Allsopp, Justin Quinn, Nick Smart, Simon Cosgrove and my younger brother, James). The project was made up of new material that I

composed, inspired by the late 60s and early 70s recordings of Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter and others.

I was a finalist in the 2002 BBC Young Composer of the Year Competition and I have had classical chamber compositions performed in workshops by the Britten Sinfonia. I am currently studying for an MA in Film Composition at the National Film and Television School on an Alan Hawkshaw and PRS Foundation Scholarship.

My younger brother, James (b.1988), is a jazz bassist and my older brother, Mark (b.1978), is a classical organist based in Toulouse, France.
